I’m sure, as beginners, we have wondered what that meant when we were just starting out and we would hear “Namaste” from our teachers, as they would bow¬†with their hands in prayer gesture. And I am also pretty sure that at one point, we have asked ourselves if we heard it correctly (Namastay?), and that we just did not know if we were supposed to reply or bow back, or not.

In simplest of terms, Namaste means “I bow to you”, thus the bowing gesture. The teacher bows to the student in gratitude and the student reciprocates for an¬†exchange of energy.
